Sutartinės

Sutartinės are a phenomenon of traditional Lithuanian music. This ancient form of polyphony dates back to pre-Christian times. Their core purpose is to achieve harmony and agreement ("sutarti")—a captivating challenge, as singers chant entirely different melodies and lyrics simultaneously. In structure, a sutartinė is closely related to a mantra. Repeated countless times, it can induce a meditative, trance-like state. When chanted correctly (singing an entire stanza on a single breath), it creates a mild oxygen shortage in the brain. This produces a dizzying, euphoric sensation similar to a holotropic breathwork session. Historically, this practice was also used to commune with spirits, which is why sutartinės are so frequently featured in rituals and sacred ceremonies.

During this sutartinės circle, you will first be introduced to the history, origins, and unique performance characteristics of this ancient tradition. Next, accompanied by the gentle sounds of the kanklės (Lithuanian zither), we will lightly warm up our voices to prepare for chanting. Finally, we will learn to perform—both chant and move to— the sutartinės. This workshop is perfectly suited for everyone, from experienced vocalists to absolute beginners. Participants are often pleasantly surprised to discover they can sing, even if they always believed they couldn't. Ida Sete is a voice expert, professional vocalist, and medicine song performer.
